What started out as a simple Mexican meal is now one of the most popular foods in the United States.

1. Tacos Are Really, Really Old. While there is some debate over when exactly the first taco was created, most experts state that the first taco was actually invented somewhere between 1,000 and 500 B.C. At the time, the taco was more about having an edible spoon and since has morphed into the dish that we know today.

However, the name taco came much later on. The first recorded reference to the word taco, then it was tacos minors, came about in the 19th century. The first mention of the word taco in the United States didn’t come around until 1905.

When they first became popular in Mexico, they were served in the silver mines. At the time, they were thin sheets of paper wrapped in gunpowder. Talk about spicy!

2. The Word Taco Means “Light Lunch”. Roughly translated, the word taco means “light lunch” there are other translations too, such as “plug” or “wad.” However, most people use the “light lunch” translation. It seems a bit odd considering most people can’t resist tacos enough to keep it light.


The term "taco" originally had nothing to do with a food dish. It was a slang term for explosives workers used in the Mexican silver mines. The explosives were pieces of paper wrapped around gunpowder and placed in the crevices of the rocks.

3. A “Taquería” is a Spanish word meaning taco shop. Originally, the term “taqueria” was used to refer to street vendors, although the term has come to be used more generally to refer to any sort of establishment which serves authentic Mexican food.

4. There is a Right Time of Day to Eat Tacos. For most people, any time of day is the right time of day to eat tacos, but there is actually a specific “taco time.” According to. Mexican tradition, seafood tacos are meant to be eaten at lunch, while antojitos are to be eaten at dinner time.

5. Americans consume more than four billion tacos every year. Americans love tacos, just like you! Did you know that Americans consume over 4 billion tacos every year? That’s a lot of tortillas. So, next time your friends try to tell you that you’re obsessed with tacos, you can rest easy knowing you’re not alone, there are lots of other Americans that are obsessed with tacos as well.


6. Taco Bell started as Bell’s Hamburgers and Hot Dogs in San Bernardino, CA back in 1950 by Glen W. Bell Jr... Bell’s Hamburgers and Hot Dogs began as a hamburger stand selling fast foods such as burgers, hot dogs, fries, and shakes. Then, taking advantage that his stand was located in a Hispanic neighborhood, Bell started selling crispy-hard-shell tacos at 19 cents each.

7. One of the first taco trucks is thought to have started in New York when in 1966 two New York housewives operated an early version of the taco truck. Although the truck did not have a full kitchen, it was available for catering.
